Sweet lesson from the past

If you’re into chocolate, you probably don’t need Valentine’s Day as an excuse to indulge, but regardless residents on Delmarva can taste historic chocolate this Valentine’s Day weekend.

The Lewes Historical Society is collaborating with Mars candy to  host a demonstration on how chocolate was made in the 18th century. The experience involves an interactive lesson and a taste of what chocolate would have been like in the 18th century. Mars Chocolate History Ambassadors go through ingredients and spices they believe the chocolate was made back then and how it was consumed by people who lived in the 18th century. Some of the spices in the chocolate are believed to include vanilla, red pepper, orange peel , nutmeg, cinnamon, and anise. These ingredients were used in different ratios to defuse some of the natural bitterness of the cocoa beans as well as the  chocolate maker’s own recipe.

Marcos Salaverria, the Director of Education at the Lewes Historical Society  took us through a demonstration on how drinkable chocolate was made in the 18th century and he tells 47 ABC,”It was present here in Delaware, it was present in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania. It’s part of our collective past. So taste some chocolate and get a taste of the past.”

The chocolate demonstrations will take place on Saturday, February 13th at 10AM and Sunday, February 14th at 12PM at the Lewes Historical Society.
