Strong Start Powers Decatur Past Mardela

The Stephen Decatur girls basketball team picked up yet another conference win Thursday night after they topped a dangerous Mardela squad 40-27. The win improves the Seahawks to 16-1, while the loss drops the Warriors to 12-6.

The Seahawks came out red hot from the field. Amaya Mumford would score consecutive baskets on the block, followed by a 3-ball from Dayona Godwin. The lead quickly grew to 12-2, drawing a couple early time outs from Mardela. The Warriors finally found their footing after Taylor Ross would get to the basket in transition for a couple scores, followed by a long ball from Arieonna Joynes that would get her team back within 3. Decatur would close out the second strong and take a 20-14 lead into half. Godwin would continue to find Mumford in the third as the sophomore finished with a game high 16 points. Then as the game was winding down, Godwin found Lexie VanKirk who would go to a step through, and knock down a short jumper for her second basket of the game. The junior was celebrating her 17th birthday and got to enjoy it with the buzzer beater and the win.

Mardela returns to work on Tuesday when they host Colonel Richardson, while Decatur host Indian River on Friday.
