Raising money for Reinas

For 17 year old Becky Reinas, life right now is somewhat of a waiting game. Reinas was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease years ago and is now on dialysis while the search for a kidney donor continues.
However, tough times bring people together and the community has rallied around her to show support and to help raise money for the surgeries she’ll inevitably need. That’s why the Crabcake Factory in Rehoboth Beach, Del. decided to host a fundriaser for Reinas on Sunday.
“It feels good that a lot of people want to come and support me,” Reinas said.
After hearing about Reinas’s story, Edie Rich worked with Crabcake Factory owner, Johnny Brooks, to put on a fundraiser. The fundraiser, complete with a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction.
“The story really touched me, it hit close to home having four girls of my own. So, I knew they needed some help and one thing I know about the Eastern Shore is we like to get behind a good local cause,” Brooks said.
For Brooks, the idea to do the fundraiser on Super Bowl Sunday from 2pm to 6pm was a no brainer.
“I knew everybody would be going to their parties and different places and wherever their going I figured on the way it would make it easy for them to stop by here and and show a little love,” Brooks said.
Brooks says the fundraiser is the biggest his restaurant has ever put on.
For Reinas’s mom, Mindy Alderfer, the support is what helps keep her and her daughter optimistic.
“It’s a lot, I mean it’s super humbling, it’s just fantastic. You know it puts a smile on your face when you need one for sure,” Alderfer said.
Monetary support is only half of Reinas’s battle. Reinas is still looking for a live kidney donor with type O blood in good health.
