On The Job: Tall Tales Brewery

Pale Ale, Stout and American Lagers are just a few choices you have when it comes to choosing the perfect beer to drink. This week 47 ABC heads to Tall Tales Brewery to learn how beer is made!

The first step in creating the perfect beer is to choose the perfect grains. Some are sweet, others offer a more bitter taste. After the grain is crushed, it’s transferred through a pipe into another room into a giant machine called a mash ton. It’s then mixed with water and left to sit for one hour.

The liquid is then pumped through a machine called a grant, which helps make it clear. That is done for about fifteen minutes until its ready to be pumped into a boil kettle. During this process, you add hops, a pellet substance that is used for bitterness, flavor and aroma.

Next up, the liquid is whirl pooled to help get rid of any extra grains. Then it must be cooled, so it’s pumped into a heat exchanger which takes the temperature down to about sixty degrees. It’s then transferred to the frementer where yeast is added in. It must sit about two weeks.

Next, it is sent through pipes to a bright tank where the final step is done, carbonation. But before the liquid is transferred in, the piping must be sanitized. After about an hour, it’s finally ready to be packaged so it’s on to the assembly line! After putting all the bottles into the boxes, they must be sealed and set on crates to be sent to distributors.
