On the Job: McDonald’s

We’ve all seen the bright yellow golden arches while driving down the road at some point. We dream about their french fries and their Big Macs are enough to make almost anyone’s mouth water. We’re talking about McDonalds!

This week “On the Job” 47 ABC visited the fast food chain to see what goes into making their food and also got behind the drive through window to serve it.

The first thing all employees must do before beginning their work day is wash their hands. After that was complete, it was time to take a look around the store. McDonald’s stock room is filled with supplies like condiments, napkins, and ketchup. It’s also where they store their soda syrup tanks.

Next to the stock room is a huge refrigerator that they call the “walk in cooler” where all refrigerated items such as eggs, milk and yogurts are stored. Attached to the refrigerator is their freezer, which is kept at about -10 degrees.

Time to get to food making! The first step in making the perfect hamburger is toasting your buns in the toaster oven for about 30 seconds. Next, you get your box ready to go. After your buns are toasted, you add your sauces. Then its on to the toppings. As soon as your toppings are done, it’s time to add the meat and since we made a Big Mac, it gets two beef patties.

But for beginners, there are handy charts that hang on the ceiling to show you which items go into each sandwich. Next order up, a cheeseburger. After putting on all the toppings comes the hardest part, the wrapping!

After the food making, it was time to move on to the drive through window. When working the drive through, there is an electronic screen that shows you all the orders that need to be given out and you must have everything done in 90 seconds or less. And practice makes perfect!

Next week 47 ABC heads to Mardela High to get behind the counter in the lunch room. If you would like to be featured on “On the Job” you can email Michelle at michelle_mackonochie@wmdt.com
