Mass General Fibrosis Research Center to open “late Spring”

Mass General has announced the establishment of their Fibrosis Research Center within the Department of Medicine. It’s dedicated to the research of fibrotic diseases like scleroderma and cirrhosis in the liver.

According to Dr. Andrew Tager, who will be leading the center at Mass General, a study with the National Institute of Health found that fibrotic diseases account for about forty- five percent of deaths in the U.S. population.

He believes a center specializing in this type of research will serve an enormous unmet need.

Dr. Tager continues, “We’re really desperate to find new therapies. One of the thoughts was that if we join together and study liver fibrosis, lung fibrosis, people studying heart failure…all came together we could make a lot more progress.”

Mass General Officials plan to have the center fully operational by late spring.
