Gaines Nets 1,000th In Big Road Win

Barry Gaines Jr. knew how close he was to joining some elite company. Wi-Hi’s senior guard started the night just 23 points shy of netting his 1,000th point of his career. And he the opportunity to get it against his old team was one he couldn’t pass up. Gaines paced his team with 25 points as Wi-Hi pulled off a big win at Bennett 90-37.

The Indians came out red hot from the floor as they quickly built up a double digit lead. Gaines would head into halftime with 16 points, and be just 7 points shy of his milestone. The Tribe opened up the third quarter looking to get the senior the ball, as he got back to back and 1’s in the paint to get even closer. Sitting 3 points shy of the mark, Gaines would spot up in the left corner, and knock down the triple to give him his record. At that point, the game was already well in hand because of some of the strong play he was getting around him. Jojo brittingham would have a big scoring night as well, pouring in 17 points. The Clippers continued to battle, and would get some good contributions including 12 points from Ernest Ayieko. But the night belonged to Gaines, and the game to Wi-Hi.

Wi-Hi returns to work Friday night when they will host Queen Anne’s, while Bennett awaits for the draw for the state tournament, which will come out on Tuesday.
