Free SAT for Wicomico County 11th graders

High School juniors in Wicomico County are getting ready to sharpen their pencils. The school district is administering the SAT at no cost on Wednesday.

This is the first time students will be getting this test for free through the district. According to College Board, registration for the test alone is $43.

Under Maryland requirements, starting with the class of 2017 all students must be assessed for college and career readiness by the end of their junior year. Wicomico County is using the SAT for the assessment. Officials say they chose this specific exam because of the type of results it provides.

Micah Stauffer, the director of secondary education says, “It does provide feedback. It doesn’t just provide information about whether they passed or failed. It provides feedback on where their weaknesses are and where they need to improve.”

When those high schoolers in Wicomico County take the SAT, they must get a score of 500 or higher on the verbal portion and a 500 or higher on the math.

If they don’t reach that score, they’ll be required to enroll in a supplementary course for their senior year. That can include a transitional math class and additional English course work. However, the results of the SAT don’t prevent students from graduating.

The high school schedule for March 2 (after testing) will be periods 4, 5, 6 and 7. Not meeting on March 2: ATEX, JROTC, VPA, morning CTE.
