Investigators from the Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash, involving a pedestrian on Federalsburg Road east of Barnes Road, that occurred around 5:15 PM Tuesday.

47 ABC has confirmed that former Delaware Representative and Deputy State Police Superintendent Ben Ewing, 84, was killed when he was struck by a car.

Police say Ewing, for an unknown reason, was in the westbound lane when he was struck by a Mazda CX5; the impact throwing him onto the shoulder of the road. Troopers say the driver of the Mazda, who was uninjured, stopped at the scene.

Ewing was pronounced dead at the scene by Sussex County Paramedics, according to Police.

Ewing represented District 35 in Delaware from 1987 until 2008, when he retired. On Tuesday, Delaware Governor Jack Markell offered up his sentiments in a statement.

“It’s hard to think about Bridgeville without thinking about the impact Ben Ewing had on that community for decades,” Markell said.  “From his service in the Marine Corps, to his career with the State Police, to his time as an elected Representative, Ben’s career was one of service to his country, state, and the people of the 35th District.  Ben and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers tonight and in the tough days to come.”

State Police say areas of Federalsburg Road between Barnes Road and Wesley Church Road have been reopened, following a preliminary investigation by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Troopers say the investigation is on-going, however alcohol and speed were not contributing factors.

If anyone has any information in reference to this incident they are asked to contact Master Corporal K. Argo at 302-703-3264.
