Tax cut questions a top matter before Md. lawmakers

(AP) – Whether to cut taxes, which ones and by how much will be the most important set of decisions for Maryland lawmakers this session.
That’s according to Warren Deschenaux, the General Assembly’s chief budget analyst, who gave lawmakers a fiscal briefing Tuesday.
Republican Gov. Larry Hogan has included about $23 million in tax and fee relief for the next fiscal year. It’s the first part of $480 million in tax cuts he wants over five years.
A commission formed by the Democratic-led legislature has made its own tax-relief proposals.
Deschenaux says lawmakers will need to decide whether the state can afford to cut revenues, given future financial uncertainty. Then, they’ll need to decide which taxes to cut and by how much.
