Students begin “character” mural at Southern Delaware School of the Arts

“Character” is the theme of a mural that will soon grace the halls of the Southern Delaware School of the Arts. Students began painting it on Tuesday.
Jaiden Vanderhorst, and eighth grader at the school says, “I’m drawing a wave. It’s going to be like the wave of kindness so just spreading joy and positivity.”
Maria Cusimano says, “I’m doing a scene in space. It’s kind of like all the planets and stars and stuff. I’m going to put explore on it because you can go lots of places if you put explore.”
The project is sponsored by the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation. Every student at the school, as well as faculty and staff members will be working on the piece.
It’s going to be a giant book shelf. The artist leading the project, John Donato says the goal is for the students to define what positive character is using visual aids, and of course putting their own spin on it.
Donato says, “By having all of these messages and because this painting will probably outlive all of us, these conversations will continue to happen long after these children grow up.”
Wednesday afternoon, parents and community members are invited to help paint the mural as well. The whole thing scheduled to wrap up by the end of the week. There will be a public reveal some time in February.
