Panel approves GOP, governor’s Supreme Court picks

(AP) – A Republican-controlled committee voted to endorse Virginia Supreme Court picks by both Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe and GOP lawmakers, likely setting up a vote Thursday by the full House.

The House Courts of Justice Committee Wednesday interviewed and approved Justice Jane Marum Roush and Court of Appeals Judge Rossie Alston.

Republicans have protested McAuliffe’s appointment of Roush in July, saying he did a poor job of consulting with GOP leaders before making his pick. GOP leaders have promised to replace Roush with Alston, who they say is better qualified. But Republicans may not have enough votes in the Senate to pull that move off.
