Obama to consider new gun control measures

The nation is waiting to see what President Obama will do after top law enforcement officials presented him with options for gun control measures on Monday.

The president did not specify what actions he plans to take; however, it is expected to include an expansion on background checks on gun sales by forcing more sellers to register as federally licensed gun dealers.

Obama says his administration’s recommendations for gun control executive actions are within his legal authority and consistent with the Second Amendment.

Delaware State University professor Dr. Samuel Hoff says the measures presented on Monday could be taken without congressional approval.

“It’s sort of analogous in a parliamentary type system of a decree power such as the Russian president and also to the French president have, so that’s what upsets some members of congress…that it could be done without their inclusion.” Explains Dr. Hoff.

In the past, President Obama has admitted new measures will not solve every violent crime in the U.S., but it could potentially “save lives and spare families the pain.”
