New Year’s superstitions

When kicking off the New Year, often there are certain superstitions or rituals people do to start the year on a positive note. One local women shared a superstition she learned when she was living on Tangier Island.

Dolores, a woman from Salisbury says, “They called it New Years giving and you went to a door and knocked on the door and you had to have some pennies if not it was going to be bad luck”

Another popular superstition includes kissing a loved one at midnight, and the purpose of that is to ensure love and affection for the next 12 months.
