Md. lawmakers urged to take up fantasy betting this session

(AP) – Maryland assistant attorneys general are urging lawmakers to take up legal issues relating to betting on fantasy sports this legislative session.

The lawyers wrote their opinion Friday in response to questions by the state Senate president. He asked for a legal opinion about 2012 legislation allowing traditional fantasy betting. He also asked whether the measure should have gone on the ballot for voters to decide, because of a 2007 constitutional amendment requiring voters to decide whether to allow slot machines.

The attorneys concluded it’s a complicated question, but that betting on daily fantasy sports should have been referred to the electorate for a vote. But they say because there was no way lawmakers could have envisioned daily fantasy sports betting as it exists now, lawmakers should revisit the issue.
