Lewes man celebrating 79th birthday by biking 8 hours for charity

While most people celebrate their birthday by taking the day off work and eating cake, one Lewes man will be celebrating his birthday next Monday at the Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth Beach.
Len Leshem says, “I’m going to be riding the stationary bike her for 8 hours.”
Len Leshem will be turning 79. He says he has been prepping the past few months on the stationary bikes at the ‘Y’.
“I’ve been here almost every single day. As my mom wife would say it’s my home away from home.” says Leshem.
Len will spend those 8 hours cycling to try and raise money for the Sussex Family YMCA and give another portion to an organization that is near and dear to his heart.
“I’ve been involved with Special Olympics for about 30 years as a volunteer coach and fundraiser. It’s where my heart is and I enjoy giving back,” says Leshem.
Officials who work at the YMCA say they aren’t surprised Leshem is taking on this challenge.
John Sangis, an employee at the Sussex Family YMCA says, “He’s a fixture at the YMCA. Always on bike number 3 when Lenny does not show up to get on the bike. People are always where’s Lenny?”
Len’s goal is to raise $12,000 dollars through donations when he takes on the 8 hour biking challenge. We’re told the money will go towards purchasing playground equipment for the ‘Y’ and it also go to the Special Olympics of Delaware.
Len will kick off his challenge next Monday, January 25th from 7 AM until 3 PM.Donations can be be made in person the day off, as well as sending a check to Special Olympics Delaware, or by clicking here to donate online.
