Jake Day’s vision for downtown

Big Changes are coming to Salisbury, Md., if Mayor Jake Day gets his downtown revitalization plan to pass. The Mayor presented it Tuesday at a city council work session.
Among some of the highlights according to Day, will be having the fastest Internet in Maryland courtesy of fiber optic cable that will be laid down and connected to all downtown locations.
Day also says the plans for a new Salisbury town center, where parking lot one currently is high on his list. Day says the town center will feature ground floor retail, restaurants and underground parking.
“I think we need to see is a significant increase in housing, in urban housing and I think that will beget and allow other types of development such as retail commercial office and entertainment, things like that,” Day said.
Day believes people will come when they see new commercial buildings being built, adding that Salisbury hasn’t had a non-government building constructed downtown in the last 40 years.
As for attracting new businesses Day says the city will continue to waive water hookup fees, which can run about $60,000.
The city would also offer small business loans, tax credits and grants.
If you’d like to take a look at the plans yourself, Day says he’ll be presenting them at the next two Third Fridays (Feb. 19 and March 18) and taking public input.
Day’s proposal will head to the city council for a final vote in March.
