HVAC malfunction causes Ocean City Elementary evacuation

Ocean City Elementary School also had a bomb threat on Tuesday and had to evacuate again during the latter part of the morning. Smoke started coming from their fourth grade classroom pod.

Taylor Davis, a fourth grader at the school says, “The class was scared, but once we got to the fire hall we weren’t really scared anymore.”

Davis had to sit with her classmates in the gym until her mom was able to pick her up from school on Tuesday.

Fire officials say there was a light haze coming from the ceiling area. The investigation revealed that it was the result of a malfunctioning HVAC unit and no one was hurt.

Steve Price, the PIO for the Ocean City Fire Department says, “The kids did a great job as well as the staff here. At all times the kids were safe. They were accompanied by staff. I have nothing but high praise for everyone involved in the situation.”

Students are scheduled to be back in the building for class on Tuesday.
