Habitat for humanity has high hopes for 2016

The Wicomico County Habitat for Humanity had a successful 2015, but they aim to do even better in the new year.

When we spoke to executive director Molly Hilligoss Sunday, her eyes were already on the last six month’s of the non-profit’s fiscal year.

“We’re on track for our fiscal year to serve an additional two more families with affordable housing,” Hilligoss said.

Hilligoss said if all things go as planned over the next six months they’ll be ahead of schedule on their goal of serving 25 families with affordable homes over the next five years.

A big reason for that projected success their 7,000 square foot ReStore in Salisbury.

“The first six month’s of this fiscal year we’re actually over 12 percent up and we closed out with a real strong December,” said store manager Jim Phillips.

The ReStore sells refurbished donated goods. Hilligoss tells us the profits are almost enough to pay for the construction of one new home a year.

Phillips said the reason they’ve done well is because people have been donating quality goods.

In order for the ReStore to have even more success, he tells 47 ABC they plan to try to inform more people in 2016 that they offer free pickup and that the donations are tax deductible.

“As long as we can continue to grow and improve those relationship the ReStore will continue to improve,” Phillips said.

Hilligoss ssaid they’ll be breaking ground on two new houses on Coles Circle in Salisbury this month and that anybody is welcome to volunteer. Those interested can register to volunteer on the non-profit’s website.
