Gaines Game-Winner Lifts Wi-Hi Past WHS

The Wicomico boys basketball team picked up a hard fought win Thursday night when they defeated Washington 65-64. The win improves the Indians to 8-6, while the loss drops the Jaguars to 8-5.
The Indians would jump out to a quick lead after Jojo Brittingham would string together a couple baskets. Devonta Dixon then got into the mix, doing most his damage in transition, while also getting a couple tough scores in the paint. The Jags would fire back and get a lay in at the buzzer from Dorian Stevens to make it a 5 point game. Wi-Hi continued to play well in the second quarter as they would take a 7 point lead into the locker room. The home team came out hot in the second half though, as Kam Somers would find his shooting touch. Once that happened, Tyler Paulson would be able to add a couple scores down low as the game would be tied heading into the fourth quarter. Tied still late, the Indians would take the lead after Brittingham drilled a couple free throws. Washington would have the answer though after Stevens scored the go-ahead and 1 with 11 seconds left at the other end. That was too much time for Wi-Hi though as Nixon drove the length of the court, and at the last second found Gaines who would power through contact for an and 1 finish of his own. The Jags would have a shot at the buzzer to win it but Somers 3 was off the mark, as Wi-Hi escaped with the win.
Washington returns to work Friday when they host Bennett, while Wi-Hi travels to play Pocomoke on Friday.
