Delegation trip taken to Guatemala and El Salvador

Senator Tom Carper has returned from his trip to El Salvador.

He, along with Vice President Joe Biden and other leaders, initially traveled to Guatemala for the inauguration of Jimmy Morales as President.

They then went to El Salvador, which now suffers the highest homicide rate of any nation not at war.

According to Senator Carper, a driving factor is the demand for illegal drugs in the U.S.

“They’re not drug users like we are but when we buy the drugs, we send money to those countries, we send it to the drug lords, we send guns down there, and they make life miserable for people who live down there.” He says. “So we have an obligation to help them help themselves.”

While in El Salvador, Senator Carper says he was able to tour a new police facility supported by U.S. funding.

He also reportedly met with business leaders to talk security and economic opportunity.
