DelDot says storm has been “a real challenge”

Delaware Department of Transportation has been working around the clock to try and keep roads clear to ensure safety.

Earlier 47 our crew was in Sussex County where the primary concern has been flooding.

Route one has been closed due to the high waters and we’re told there is significant flooding in the Long Neck area and Prime Hook Road.

We’re told as of this evening crews were still working to clear the main roads in Kent County, as they’re dealing with almost a foot of snow.

Gov. Jack Markell has issued a level two driving restriction for the county meaning no one should be on the road except for emergency personnel.

Officials say all of DelDot’s 330 snow plows are currently out on the roads.

“It’s been a real challenge, especially down south because you know not only do we have snow, but we also have drifting and flooding issues so it’s been a real challenge for those folks. You know they’re working very hard through the night and still it didn’t seem like there was too much headway because the snow just kept on drifting back on the road,” said Jim Westhoff, public information officer for DelDot.

DelDot officials warn that as night fall comes roads may freeze over making driving conditions very difficult.

Right now they’re asking all drivers to stay off the roads because it is both dangerous and it makes it harder for DelDot to clear the roadways.
