Wednesday was a tough day for many state leaders across Delaware learning the news that the pedestrian victim killed in Tuesday’s fatal crash in Bridgeville was former state representative Ben Ewing.

The crash happened around 5:00 p.m. Tuesday on Federalsburg Road.

47ABC caught up current District 35 Rep. David Wilson who says he not only considered Ewing a mentor but also a great friend. Representative Wilson says Ewing, who served for 21 years, was the one who encouraged him to run for the seat. Wilson described him as a true statesman.

“He’s going to sadly missed by so many.” Explains Rep. Wilson,  “I mean, this building [Legislative Hall] will never be the same that his legacy, that he left here but every senator and representative who’s ever come through these doors has made their mark and Rep. Ben Ewing “Gentle Ben” has made his mark.”

Delaware Governor Jack Markell released a statement to 47ABC, saying it’s hard to think about Bridgeville without thinking about the impact Ewing had on that community for decades.

“From his service in the Marine Corps, to his career with the State Police, to his time as an elected Representative, Ben’s career was one of service to his country, state, and the people of the 35th District.  Ben and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers tonight and in the tough days to come.” Says Governor Markell.

Ewing also served as a Delaware State Trooper before retiring in 1978.

“The Delaware State Police is saddened by the tragic death of Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Ewing. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Ewing Family.” Colonel Nathaniel McQueen, Jr., Superintendent of Delaware State Police, says. “The Delaware State Police is eternally grateful for his service to the citizens of Delaware.”

Funeral arrangements have not made available to the public yet.
