DE Senator Talks Next Steps For HB 50

Parents and legislators gathered outside of Legislative Hall on Thursday rallying to over-turn a veto on House Bill 50, and Delaware lawmakers refused to override it. But one Delaware Senator says the issue isn’t dead yet.
Governor Jack Markell vetoed House Bill 50, which would have allowed the opt-out option. While lawmakers couldn’t overturn the veto, Senator David Lawson tells 47 ABC an entirely new bill could be written up. Lawson thinks public pressure will lead to the creation of this new legislation because he says the testing is out of hand.
47 ABC spoke with Lawson and he says, “The big thing is the parents rights. Parents have the right to pull their children out of those things they have the obligation to do what’s best for their children. It is a wasted test period. And so the parents should be able to opt out and it should be codified for them to do that.”
Lawson says the parents and lawmakers in support of the initiative, will likely regroup and discuss their next course of action. But nothing is on the table just yet.
