Blood donations urgent in winter weather

With treacherous conditions ahead this winter, The Blood Bank of Delmarva says they need blood donors to compensate for the trauma that comes with icy roads. Michael Waite, a spokesman for the nonprofit organization adds that on top of the bad road conditions, shipping blood to hospitals is also harder. This is why it is important to keep blood on the shelves of the 18 hospitals they serve.
You must also be healthy to give blood, which is why in the heart of winter it’s tougher to get donations. In the frigid winter – it’s the heat of cold and flu season, which leads to less donations coming in.
Officials and volunteers alike say that there is always a need for blood, but the stress on donations now comes as a safety precaution – the “what if” factor. Just a few minutes of your time could save up to three lives, something volunteers say feels pretty good.
