Beebe Healthcare to host free community CPR classes

A local hospital is offering community CPR classes, at no cost.

Beebe Healthcare says they are providing free cardiopulmonary resuscitation classes, the second Saturday of each month at 9:00 AM. The classes will be held at Beebe Healthcare’s Medical Center in Lewes, and are for non-medical members of the community.

CPR is done when a person’s heart stops or fails to supply enough oxygen and blood flow to the tissues of the body. Studies have shown that if CPR is started within a few minutes, the person has a better chance of survival without serious damage to the brain or other organs.

The course teaches adult hands-only CPR, child CPR, infant CPR, automated external defibrillator – AED use, and what to do when someone is choking. The classes which use a combination of video lecture and hands-on practice with manikins, are not full-certification CPR class and cards are not issued, but they are run by a trained volunteer. Participants will receive a small reference book.

“This class will teach the basics of CPR, which will allow more residents to know what to do in a situation where a person may be in cardiac arrest,” said Julia Bayne, RN, MSN, Clinical Educator at Beebe Healthcare. “Knowing the basics and taking action can help save a person’s life while emergency responders are on their way.”

Each free class is about two hours, and a reservation is required. For more information or to reserve a spot, call 302-645-3248.
