What to do with your Christmas tree after the holiday

After Christmas, many people put their tree out to be collected or throw it in a dumpster.  It turns out that is one of the worst things for the environment.  Nichols Tree Farm in Hebron, Md. tells 47ABC that Christmas trees are recyclable! And there is a full laundry list of ways it can enhance the environment.

Trees can be used to enhance fish habitats.  You can put it in a pond and the fish use it for cover.  Too many trees obviously can harm the fish, but if you have a backyard pond or a stream to go fishing in the tree can do wonders to the underwater environment.

It can also be used for wildlife cover.  Putting trees in a wooded area could provide a nice home for rabbits, fox or groundhogs.  Beach towns can use their Christmas trees to stabilize the dunes.  They can also be broken down into mulch and enrich the soil.  Owner of Nichols Tree Farm Bruce Nichols says at the very least to cut down the tree to use for bonfires.  From wildlife habitats – to stumps shaved off and made in to coasters, there are many ways to recycle your tree.
