Unresponsive child call leads to arrest in Sharptown

Darren Lee Adkins, 25

A 25-year-old Wicomico County man is facing charges, after the death of a child.

The Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office says on December 1, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to Little Water Street, in Sharptown, for reports of an unresponsive sixteen-month old child. The toddler was reportedly then taken to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center, before being transferred to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.. She was apparently pronounced dead on December 4.

The case was referred by the Sheriff’s Office, to the Wicomico County Child Advocacy Center for further investigation. That investigation reportedly led to the arrest of 25-year-old Darren Lee Adkins, on charges of first and second degree child abuse, and other related charges.

Adkins was apparently a household member of the child, but not a biological relative. Detectives from the Child Advocacy Center say they are continuing to investigate the matter.

Adkins is currently being held without bond.
