Two charged for abuse of 5-week-old infant in Caroline County

A Greensboro couple has been charged, after Police say they abused a newborn baby over the summer.

Greensboro Police say over the weekend they arrested 23-year-old Heather Burris, and 30-year-old Walter Shinn III in connection the the investigation into an abused infant. According to the report, in July 21, Officers responded to a call of a 5 and a half week-old-infant with multiple broken ribs at a local hospital. Police say they baby was immediately transferred to John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where she was admitted in critical condition.

Investigators say it was found that the infant was suffering from multiple broken bones, serious head trauma, and other injuries. Police say they found that the infant has been injured in the early part of July, a time which Burris and Shinn were the primary caregivers for her. Several other people reportedly had access to the infant from time of her birth on June 12, but Investigators say they were all ruled out as suspects.

The Caroline County States Attorney’s Office reportedly reviewed the case, and issued warrants for Burris and Shinn. After her December 11 arrest, Burris was charged with child abuse first and second degree, and neglect of a minor. On December 13, Shinn was arrested at his home, and charged with the same counts, plus assault first and second degree. Both are currently being held at the Caroline County Detention Center on bond.

Police say the infant is now in the care of a family member, and is still recovering from her injuries. The long term effects of her injuries apparently can not be determined at this time. The Greensboro Police Department says there were assisted in the investigation by Maryland State Police, The Caroline County States Attorney’s Office, and the Caroline County Department of Social Services.
