“Shop Maryland” encourages local shopping

On his last stop for this season’s Shop Maryland For The Holidays tour, Comptroller Peter Franchot stopped in Salisbury to stroll through the city’s downtown shops.

Monday’s tour started at Kuhn’s Jewelers on West Main Street. It also included the Main Roots coffee shop, Angello’s Gifts and Roadie Joe’s Bar and Restaurant.

This is an annual tour hosted by the Comptroller. The goal is to encourage Marylanders to shop locally for the holidays.

According to Main Roots employee Joseph Hill, shopping locally year-round is imperative for small businesses in more ways than one.

“When you shop local, not only are you creating more jobs in the local economy, but you also keep more money in the local economy versus going to a corporate store.” Says Hill, “I try to shop locally as much as I possibly can whether it’s restaurants or gift shops, anything like that.”

After his visit to Salisbury, Comptroller Franchot also stopped at the Bay Country Bakery in Cambridge. There, he reportedly presented a proclamation to the store owners and their staff on their 16 years of success as a local business.
