Pocomoke Escapes Decatur With Late Road Win

The final horn sounded as the ball flew through the air, with the game hanging in the balance. The shot would catch back iron, and fall off no good, giving Pocomoke a huge 37-36 road win at Decatur.

The win improves the Warriors to 5-1, while the loss drops the Seahawks to 5-1. Before the game even began, it was a special night for Decatur senior Dayona Godwin as she was recognized for breaking the schools all-time scoring record on the road at Crisfield last week. The Warriors would come out and grab a small lead, led by Dynaisha Christian who would finish the first quarter with 7 of her teams 9 points. The Seahawks continued to attack her defensively though, and were able to draw her 3rd person early in the second quarter. Without Christian defensively down low, Amaya Mumford was able to get going for the Seahawks as she would draw her team close by halftime. The fouls began to mount for both teams. Neither team played deep into their bench, and in the physical part of the game created 59 fouls called between the two teams. Shayla Jones would come up with a loose ball and put back with 4 seconds left in the third quarter to give Pocomoke a 26-23 lead headed to the fourth quarter. There, Lexie VanKirk would string together consecutive baskets for 4 of her 9 points as Decatur would draw even at 6:46 left in the game. Christian would continue to dominate the paint though as she would help her team retake the lead with under 2 minutes to go. With under 30 seconds to play, Decatur would have the ball down 3 on an inbounds. Godwin would work to get the ball, then get fouled on her 3 point attempt with 15 seconds left. After missing the first, she would make the next 2 to get her team within 1. Pocomoke would then bring up the ball and get fouled. After missing a pair of freethrows, there would be a battle for the loose ball, and it would go out of bounds, off Decatur. Pocomoke would then travel on the ensuing inbounds, giving the ball to Decatur with 10 seconds left for one last chance to win it. They would bring up the ball in a hurry, swing it around and find Chloe Sass’s shot would be off the mark, as Pocomoke would escape town with the win.

Pocomoke returns to work Tuesday when they play Walkersville in the Governor’s Challenge Tip Off, while Decatur will face McDonogh in the Governor’s Challenge on Saturday.
