New Delaware organization adopts a family for the holidays

Four months ago a group of women decided they wanted to give back to their community and in a short amount of time they’re already making a difference. The women are known as the Charitable Dames of Delaware. They are a new organization established for women by women that are dedicated to uplifting members of their community, whether that is through financial or emotional help. The Charitable Dames are looking to bring some holiday cheer to local families.
Jennifer Durham, the President of the Charitable Dames of Delaware says, “It started with a post one day in August asking. If anyone was interested in starting a ladies organization and ladies group just to basically uplift and empower the community and other women in the community.”
During the holiday season, the Dames have nominated families to help. The money they raise through social events goes to buying basic household needs such as towels and shampoo as well as assisting parents in buying presents for their children. Jennifer Moran is the head of household for one of those families. The single mother of seven is also a breast cancer survivor. In 2011, Moran was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, but today Jennifer’s cancer free . However, she has not been able to go back to work because of the damage the chemotherapy has caused to the nerves of her arms and legs. The Charitable Dames of Delaware believe in Jennifer’s family because they see her as a truly selfless mother whom is devoted to her kids.
Jennifer Moran says, “To me it’s not about big things its the little things in life that really make the difference. They’ve asked for different things, could be a shirt, could be a movie. The little one definitely likes Frozen.”
However, for Jennifer, these women mean more than just a financial boost.
“Beyond the monetary or gifts would be a friendship and someone to turn to and talk to. To uplift women and general and it myself when you’re feeling down or struggling or having a hard time,” says Moran.
The next fundraising event hosted by the Charitable Dames will be on January 7th at 6PM at The Inn at Duck Creek in Smyrna, DE. The Dames are also looking for help from sponsors to continue helping families in need.
