Man cited after handgun is found in carry-on items at BWI

(AP) – Maryland Transportation Authority Police say a Walkersville man was cited after a handgun was found in carry-on items at a security checkpoint at BWI Airport.
It happened shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday, police and the Transportation Security Administration said in emails. Authorities say an x-ray machine detected a .32 caliber handgun.
Police confiscated the gun and cited 28-year-old Kelby Scott Ferwerda for transporting a handgun and interfering with security procedures.
The TSA says this is the 16th gun that its officers have detected at BWI checkpoints this year. Fourteen firearms were detected all of last year.
