Lewes man in critical condition after crash in Georgetown

A Lewes man is reportedly recovering, after Police say he crashed on Saturday, while fleeing from law enforcement.

Delaware State Police say around 12:05 AM on December 19, 23-year-old Hertford Draper was driving a 1995 Cadillac Deville on Cedar Lane, coming up to Sussex Pines Road. According to the report, he was moving at a high rate of speed, actively fleeing from the Millsboro Police Department, and didn’t navigate a curve.

Police say Draper’s vehicle then slid off the road into a wooded area, where he hit a large tree, severely damaging the passenger compartment of the car. Police say Draper wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and had to be extricated from the Cadillac by the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department.

He was then rushed to Beebe Healthcare by EMS, where he was treated for multiple traumatic injuries, before being flown by helicopter to Christiana Medical Center, where he is currently admitted in critical condition. Draper was apparently the only person in the vehicle.

Police say the intersection of Cedar Lane and Sussex Pines Road was closed for about three hours, while the crash was investigated by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, and cleared.
