Leaders reach historic climate change deal

World leaders have been invited to the U.N. in April to sign the landmark agreement to tackle climate change.

Over the weekend, nearly 200 nations approved a deal that is designed to curb global warming.

World leaders, including President Obama, admit the agreement is not perfect but they say it sets a framework that will contain periodic review to ensure that countries meet their commitments.

According to Dr. Sarah Surak, a professor at Salisbury University, the amount of activity from civilians pushing for change was monumental in itself; however, the talks cannot end just because an agreement has been reached.

“The fear is that the momentum will be lost since there is some sort of an agreement that seems like it’s going to be something that could be quite good for the globe.” Explains Dr. Surak. “It will only be good if we maintain these sorts of pressures from civil society to make sure that governments are doing what they promised to do.”

According to Dr. Surak, the U.S. senate does not have to ratify this treaty before it is signed by President Obama.
