Godwin Sets Scoring Mark In Seahawks Win

Dayona Godwin knew she had a chance at making history Tuesday night. And like she has been her entire career at Decatur, the senior guard was up for the challenge. Godwin not only would finish the night with a game high 31 points, but she would help guide her team to a big 67-35 road win.

Godwin entered Tuesdays showdown at Crisfield just 17 points away from tying Stephen Decatur’s all-time scoring mark, and she was determined to pass it in this one. She came out of the gates on fire to start, converting on 5 lay ups in the first quarter to get within 7 points of the mark. The Crabbers weren’t interested in just letting her have the record or her earning the win on this night though. Crisfield battled early led by Arielle Johnston, who fought for every loose ball, attacked the rim and was able to find open teammates such as Evyan Potter and Crystal Merritt who would connect on several shots. Crisfield then made a defensive adjustment and started keying on Godwin, forcing other Seahawks to step up.

And they did.

Amaya Mumford found a rhythm on the block, as did Lexi Vankirk as they tallied 13 and 12 points respectively. The Seahawks would take a healthy lead into halftime with Godwin just 1 point off from tying the mark. At the midway point in the third quarter, she would collect 1 of her 11 rebounds and draw a foul on the put back. After missing the first, she would net the second to tie the mark. The Crabbers seemed intent to not let her break the mark as they picked up their defensive pressure. Finally, with under 2 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Godwin would take a pass on the left wing, swing through and go to a power move on the baseline and finish through contact for an and one finish. She would finish the night with 31 points, none more meaningful than those 2.

Stephen Decatur returns to work Thursday when they travel to Washington, while Crisfield returns to the court to face Pocomoke on the road on Friday.
