Coalition calls on Gov. Markell to change stance on Syrian refugees

Despite bad weather Thursday afternoon, members of the ‘Concerned Coalition Alliance of Delaware’ stood on the steps of Legislative hall, in the pouring rain, to deliver their message.
They hope that their dedication might sway Governor Jack Markell, who currently supports the acceptance of Syrian refugees into the first state.
“Their need is not taxpayer supplied housing and EBT cards in Dover, Newark, or Seaford.” Karen Gritton, a member of the coalition, tells 47 ABC.
The coalition is comprised of community leaders and activists. They tell 47 ABC they represent more than 10,000 Delawareans concerned how accepting refugees might negatively affect the first state.
In a statement sent to 47 ABC by the Governor’s office, the settlement of refugees is a decision made by the federal government, not each individual state.
Meaning that although Governor Markell supports their acceptance he would not be able to make the ultimate decision.
The coalition and some state legislators call the governor’s stance into question because they feel the state needs a comprehensive plan in place prior to accepting refugees to deal with the situation from their placement to the funding.
“I understand that the federal government is going to fund them, that’s what we’ve been told, but it’s still taxpayer money.” said Senator David Lawson (R) – District 15.
In light of terror attacks that have taken place in Boston and San Bernardino, the concerns among many have been that the vetting process isn’t strong enough.
The Governor’s office tells us that they have strong confidence in the U.S. security checks for travelers.
U.S. Senator Chris Coons shares the stance taken by Governor Markell but remains cautious.
Last month,he said,”We need to do our homework and have a responsible, bipartisan conversation about what is the refugee screening policy,”
