Woodbridge track student invited to Australia

I’myia Custis has spent tireless hours training on the Woodbridge High School track, and now, she has her sights set on Australia. Just about one month ago she was invited to play in the Down Under Sports Tournaments to compete in the East Conference track and field. Only one student from each state is selected, and they want her.

47 ABC spoke with Custis and she says, “I just really love it to be honest and I just like how it feels and to me you let everything out when you’re running. To know that I’m doing something good and to represent my school and state.”

This opportunity didn’t come without hard work. Custis has been running track since the 6th grade and she says each year she works harder to improve her running. Even though she got asked to participate weeks ago, Custis’ coach Emilio Perry didn’t even know. In fact, it was our phone call to Custis that broke the news.

Perry tells 47 ABC, “I was taken back but, hold on, why are you going to Australia? She doesn’t make a big deal out of things and you can always tell that that’s a humble child and someone you want representing the state. My years with working with Imiyah you know she’s proven to be a go-getter type of kid.”

So, according to Perry, she’s earned her spot. But getting there is no easy feat. Custis needs $4,000 and right now she’s at $350. She is now fundraising to meet her goal and she’s got a long way to go.

Custis tells 47 ABC, “It means a lot for real, I’ve done so much hard work and I used to always doubt myself but no I can really believe in and actually go forward and have something to look back on.”

When asked what words of wisdom she has for other athletes? Just go for it, put all your effort in and never give up. If you would like to donate towards Custis’ trip you can do so by visiting http://downundersports.com/
