Wicomico Co. advocates students to live healthy lifestyles

A townhall meeting was held at Wor-Wic college Tuesday afternoon to focus on the children in Wicomico County and how to help them in terms of nutrition, health, and education.
Two years ago Wicomico was the only county to have all of its schools participate in a initiative called “Fuel up to Play 60”, which promotes children understanding the importance of eating healthy and doing 60 minutes of exercise a day. At the meeting, every county school displayed a storyboard outlining their accomplishments through this initiative, such as making breakfast programs inclusive and starting walking clubs.
Staci Carbone, a physical education teacher at Fruitland Intermediate says, “I thought I was to be enthusiastic about it but there are students coming down bringing Fuel Up posters, asking what events we should have. There are students making obstacle courses outside of the playground.”
Wicomico County education officials say they are happy with the students response. However they do want more involvement from community members to donate healthy snacks–as well as become mentors to keep students on the right path.
