Wesley women get win number one in home opener

The Wesley women’s basketball team won their season opener, defeating Southern Virginia 93-84, at Wentworth Gymnasium Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Tiyanna Gibbs led all scorers with 25 points, while backcourt mate Monesha Newome-Murray netted 20 points in her college debut.

Southern Virginia would take their largest lead of the game (8 points) in the second quarter, before Wesley came back to take a 43-39 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Southern Virginia would again take control, leading 65-64 entering the fourth quarter. The Wolverines would use a fast pace, attacking press to force multiple turnovers and end with a +10 point advantage in the fourth frame.

Wesley moves to 1-0 on the season and will return to action on Friday when they face Colby College in the BSU Bears Invitational hosted by Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts.
