Virginia Beach police injured in gun accident

(AP) – Virginia Beach police say an officer’s gun accidentally discharged during cleaning and injured another officer.

The incident occurred around 5:53 p.m. Wednesday at the Academi range in Moyock, North Carolina. Officers from the Virginia Beach department were cleaning their weapons after completing firearms training at the range.

Virginia Beach police said Thursday in news release that the injured officer was shot in the arm. He was treated at local hospital and released.

The police department plans to conduct an internal investigation and a review of training and safety protocols. Police say no one has been placed on administrative leave because the incident is considered as an accidental discharge.

Police say the officers involved won’t be identified since it’s an internal investigation.
