Veterans rehabilitate through hunting

For military personnel that love the outdoors, both active and retired, a local affiliate of Freedom Hunters has been growing in Virginia.

The non-profit organization takes select active duty and combat veterans on outdoor adventures, such as hunting and fishing trips. In addition, they work with wounded warriors, families who have a member deployed and families who have lost a loved one in active duty.

This weekend the Virginia based group was able to take a record 26 soldiers, including two wounded warriors, out to hunt on Chincoteague Island.

The group said that they’ve been taking hunting trips on Chincoteague for four years now.

Without the support of the community though, Freedom Hunters coordinators said they would not be able to pull their trips off.

American legion Post 159 in Chincoteague,  coordinators said, has been vital in helping them with their trips.

Tyson Foods also helped, providing free hot meals and a tour of their facility.

While Saint Andrews church also donated their space this past Friday and cooked for the organization.
