UPDATE: Missing Washington College student found dead

Jacob Marberger, a Washington College student last seen on Monday morning, was found dead on Saturday near Hamburg, Pennsylvania.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, Marberger was found just before 3 p.m. Saturday in a picnic area of the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary of the Albany Township in Berks County. Police say Marberger died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The green Land Rover that Marberger was believed to be driving was also located at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.

Washington College was placed on lock-down through Thanksgiving break after Marberger’s parents notified the school that he had returned to their Pennsylvania home on Monday morning and may have retrieved a firearm.

In a Facebook post, Chief Adrian Baker of the Chestertown Police Department expressed his condolences Saturday night stating “My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding at this difficult time.”

Washington College also released a statement on Saturday evening, which read in part “This is a terrible blow to our community, and the outpouring of compassion and support we have shown each other will help us through this difficult time. We need to continue to be supportive of each other as we mourn individually and as a community.”

The school says there will be counseling services on-hand for students when they return to campus after Thanksgiving.
