SU Flying High On Field Gull

The SU football team traveled to Dover to take on No. 3 Wesley Saturday afternoon, and pulled out an improbable 38-35 win. The win improves the Sea Gulls to 6-2 on the year, while the loss drops the Wolverines to 8-1, and marks SU’s first win over their rivals in 10 years.

Salisbury would strike first after Jerome Johnson would take an option pitch off the left side in from 21 yards out. The Wolverines would come right back though, as Joe Callahan was able to avoid the rush, and then found Bryce Shade deep down the field who would take it in from 55 yards out. SU would then go back out in front by a short touchdown run by Connor Canonico. Callahan would then do it himself, taking a keeper off the left side in from 9 yards out to again tie the game at 14.

Isiah Taylor would then have a 10 yard touchdown reception from Ryan Jones as the Gulls offense was clicking on all cylinders. But so was the Wolverines. Jamar Baynard would break a 55 yard touchdown run up the left side to tie the game at 21-21 at the half. Kyle opened the second half with Callahan’s 2nd touchdown pass of the game, this one to Kyle George. Josh McClain would then have a 33 yard touchdown reception from Jones as the teams continued to exchange scores. Baynard would then add another long score, this time a 55 yard pass from Callahan to put Wesley in front 35-28 with 3:47 left in the 3rd. Brady Curly would finish a gulls drive with a touchdown run off the left side as the teams would head into the final quarter tied at 35-35. There the defense finally showed up, with both teams opening with 2 consecutive stops. SU would get the ball with under 6 minutes to go, and manufactured a 36 yard drive, down to Wesley’s 19. The 36 yard field goal attempt was good, as SU pulled out in front. The Wolverines had one last chance, but their attempt on 4th and short fell incomplete, as SU pulled off the incredible upset.
