Rehoboth Beach votes in support of zoning ordinance

Rehoboth Beach residents voted to uphold a zoning ordinance at a referendum held Saturday.

The ordinance, which aims to limit the size of future homes and properties, was passed by commissioners in the summer.

Donna Mabry, a member of Rehoboth Neighbors United, tells 47ABC the ordinance would serve as a benefit to residents in the area. She says large buildings and homes that take up majority of a lot allow very little green space for trees, threatening the “character” of Rehoboth Beach.

“It creates a lot of external problems for the neighbors because of parking, noise, congestion, trash…” Says Mabry.

On Saturday afternoon, some opponents argued the ordinance is flawed. Lisa Trivits claimed the passed ordinance did not have proper input from residents and homeowners.

“We have a house we’ve had for 30 years…or hasn’t been renovated for 30 years.” Explained Trivits. “It’s a 1940s house and we can’t do simple renovations to the landscaping because the zoning has changed.”

Residents voted to uphold the ordinance with a 785 to 697 vote on Saturday.
