Psychologist supports AMA’s call for ads ban
47 ABC spoke to a local clinical psychologist who does say television ads can be especially damaging for those who are susceptible to substance abuse.
This is why she is supporting the American Medical Association’s call to ban direct-to-consumer ads for prescription drugs and medical devices.
Dr. Kathy Seifert says ads often push the idea that a pill or medical device can solve a person’s pain or problems.
However, she explains that prescriptions often have to be combined with some sort of lifestyle change to be effective.
Dr. Seifert continues, “I think we are on a very slippery slope to have these brand name pharmaceuticals being advertised to the general public. They are not physicians. They do not know what’s best for them.”
Dr. Seifert suggests folks with questions regarding prescription drugs should get information from a primary care physician.
