Program allows hunters to donate unwanted deer meat

Deer hunting season is right around the corner, but what if you like the game, but not the food? That’s where The Sportsman Against Hunger Program comes in.

The program allows hunters who don’t want to eat their meat to bring it to various locations across Delaware. It will then be donated to those in need. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it comes in handy for food banks and soup kitchens to feed the less fortunate.

47 ABC spoke with Sergeant John McDerby with the Fish & Wildlife DNR Police and he says, “It’s a great program because its a way for hunters to give back to the community to help others who have fallen on unfortunate times and for the deer not to go to waste.”

If you have any unwanted deer meat you may bring it to any of these locations.

In Sussex County: The Assawoman Wildlife Area near Bethany Beach, the Mosquito Control Office in Milford, the headquarters office at Redden State Forest near Georgetown, the Gumboro Community Center in Millsboro and Trap Pond State Park.

In Kent County: The Woodland Beach Wildlife Area Aquatic Resources Education Center near Symrna and the Main office on the Norman G. Wilder Wildlife Area near Viola.

In New Castle County: The Augustine Wildlife Area, in Port Penn.
