Hurricane Kate

As it increased in strength, Kate became a Hurricane early Wednesday (11/11/15) with winds sustained at 75 mph and a central low pressure of 985 mb.  Kate is far out in the Atlantic and luckily poses no threat to the US, especially as it moves ENE at 44 mph.  As Kate accelerates to the northeast it is expected to drop back to tropical storm strength mid-day Thursday.  Kate is now the 4th hurricane of the 2015 season as it is a weak category 1.

If we recall from the spring, NOAA forecasted 6-11 named storms, 3-6 hurricanes, and 0-2 major hurricanes.  So far this year that prediction is holing true with 11 named storms, 4 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes.  Hurricane season officially ends on November 30th, so there is still a possibility to add more tropical storms into the count.  We will keep a close eye on the tropics as the season wraps up.
