Harrington man charged for attempting to steal car

A Harrington man is facing charges, after he apparently attempted to steal a vehicle from a gas station.

Harrington Police say on Thursday, Officers responded to the Valero on South Dupont Highway, for reports of a vehicle theft. Once on scene, they met with someone who said that they had left their car running while they went inside the store, but while inside, they saw someone get into the car, and try to drive off.

Police say the victim was able to confront the suspect, who then fled. Officers say they were able to get a description of the suspect, and found surveillance footage of the incident. They searched the area, but apparently couldn’t find the suspect.

According to the report, a few minutes later, Officers were called to the Post Office on Commerce Street, for reports of a man breaking into a mail truck, before fleeing while being confronted by employees.

Police say this time when they searched the area, they located 22-year-old Uniquie Baynard, on Delaware Avenue at Liberty Street. Officers say Baynard matched the description of the suspect in both incidents, and was seen on the surveillance footage from the gas station.

He was then arrested, and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, and theft under $1,500, and held on a $2,000 bond at the Sussex Correctional Institute.
