Delmar claws past Wilmington Christian

The Delmar Wildcats moved swiftly in their state semifinal against Wilmington Christian, jumping out to a 3-0 lead at the half, before defeating the Warriors 4-1 to advance to the state championship game.

Sophomore Peyton Kemp got the scoring started for the Wildcats, with her blast off a corner. Her shot gave Delmar the lead with 16:47 left in the first half. Delmar goalie Madison Blewitt came up with a couple great saves when Wilmington Christian pressed for the equalizer.

With 3:07 to go before half, the Wildcats would strike once again, Anna Webster got a pass from Kemp. With a 2-0 lead moments before halftime, Delmar kept the pressure on, until it payed off with Kemp’s second goal of the half, coming with :17 seconds remaining til the break, bringing the score to 3-0.

With a 3-0 at the break, Wilmington Christian’s Jennifer Kurlej would get her team on the board with 13:42. After minutes passed by with not much action, Webster scored her second goal with 2:15 remaining, capping the night for Delmar.

The Wildcats advance to another state championship against Cape Henlopen, falling in 2011 and 2013 title games to the Vikings.
